First Migrant Hotspot Opens in Lesvos

lesvos_migrantsThe first migrant and refugee registration centre opened in the East Aegean Greek island of Lesvos on Friday at a former military base in the area of Moria.
The hotspot will be operated by Greek authorities as well as Frontex and Europol agents, European Asylum Support Office staff and the EU Judicial Cooperation Agency employees. The centre will be responsible for registering and identifying the newly arrived migrants and refugees.
European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos, as well as Greek Alternate Minister of Migration Policy Giannis Mouzalas and Luxembourg’s Foreign and European Affairs Minister Jean Asselborn were on the island for the hotspot’s first working day.
“This signifies that the refugee registration and identification plan is working completely. It is an important step but we have a lot more to go for the implementation of the hotspots in other areas, and for the relocation and the improvement of the return of illegal immigrants,” Avramopoulos said.
The former Greek Health Minister further added that had hotspots operated ten months ago this summer’s events surrounding the refugee crisis would have been avoided.
