Municipal Police Officers Set to Reappear in the Greek Capital

dhmotikMunicipal Police officers will reappear in the Greek capital on October 26th, after a two year absence.
The New Democracy-PASOK-DIMAR coalition government had abolished the municipal police units across Greece in the summer of 2013 to cut down on spending costs. However, in 2014 the same government adopted a law that called for the reinstatement of municipal police in certain cities including Athens. The Greek Council of State approved the plan on January 13, 2015.
Athens Municipal Police officers will be handing out pamphlets throughout the capital’s streets to inform its citizens of their exact duties and how they can be useful to residents.
The return of the capital’s municipal police has garnered the support of Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis who has urged Athens’ citizens to support their return as well. Athens Vice-mayor Antonis Kafentozpoulos joined municipal police officers in handing out pamphlets on Friday morning.
