German Foreign Min Frank-Walter Steinmeier Visits Greece on Thursday

germanfm-frankGerman Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier is visiting Athens on Thursday to discuss the refugee crisis and the progress of the bailout program implementation.
Steinmeier will meet with President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos at 1pm and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras at 1:30 pm. Following the meeting with the two heads of state, the German minister will also meet with his Greek counterpart, Nikos Kotzias.
In the evening, the German foreign minister will visit the University of Piraeus for a ceremony where he will be given the title of honorary professor.

Prior to the meetings, Spokesperson of Germany’s Foreign Ministry Martin Schaefer said: “A close cooperation between Greece and the European Union is necessary on the migration issue as well as a close cooperation with Germany.” He added that the German minister is visiting Greece in order to see the refugee situation and advise the Greek government on how to deal with the problem.
Schaefer also said that “we need common European solutions to deal with the refugee crisis. From the perspective of the foreign minister, a common European asylum system and a more fair distribution of the refugee inflow burden are needed.”
