Panathinaikos Football Coach Leaves the Club

αναστασιουPanathinaikos F.C. coach Yiannis Anastasiou has terminated his contract with the club in a mutual decision on Monday, following a stint of under-performing results in the Greek league.
Panathinaikos, who has not won the championship since 2010, is already eight points behind last season’s champions and league leaders Olympiacos F.C., nine games into the season.
Sunday’s draw against AEK in Panathinaikos’s home ground generated evident disapproval from the game’s attending fans, toward the team, the manager, and even toward the owner Yiannis Alafouzos.
Anastasiou had been Panathinaikos’s coach since May 2013. During these two and a half years the Athenian team claimed the Greek cup in 2013.
Alafouzos expressed his gratitude for Anastasiou via the club’s official announcement on his termination.
“Yannis came to Panathinaikos at very difficult time in May 2013. Together we created a plan that was implemented with responsibility and resulted in the creation of a team, that the whole sporting fan community applauded. We had important successes and of course these are attributed to him to an important degree. During our relationship mistakes were made from both sides. All of us in Panathinaikos thank him for his contribution and wish him well in his career,” Alafouzos noted.
