On the occasion of European Equal Pay Day 2015, the European Commission draws attention to the gender pay gap, and its underlying causes.
In Greece, the gender overall earnings gap stands at 45.2 percent compared to 41.1 percent that is the average gender overall earnings gap in the EU. The gender pay gap is the difference in average gross hourly wage between men and women across all employment sectors.
In an event held by the Region of Attica on equal pay between the sexes, Manpower Employment Organisation (OAED) head Maria Karamesini stressed that the gender gap in hourly wages increases with age and suggested ways to reduce the gap.
She referred to labour market reforms through the reintroduction of collective bargaining and combating of undeclared work, parental leave policies to facilitate women, and reassessment of male and female skills and wage ranking.
