A surprising incident took place on the Greek island of Lesvos. Greek Orthodox Christians and Muslims gathered in order to pray together for the refugees’ struggle.
A memorial service was organized on the island Wednesday, November 4, in memory of the refugees who drowned in the icy waters of the Aegean Sea while crossing the maritime borders between Turkey and Greece. Church representatives, refugees, volunteers, doctors as well as Lesvos residents and foreign journalists attended the event, paying their respects.
After the religious ceremony came to an end, Syrian refugees started praying in memory of the refugees who drowned. Among them were parents who had lost their children and husbands who had lost their wives in deadly shipwrecks.
“Through this symbolic gesture, we want to show the whole world that, regardless of religion and origin, we all stand united against the criminals who send mothers and young children to their death on a daily basis. Let’s join forces in a silent protest against the modern criminal slave traders and for the intervention to put an end to their murderous actions,” said the island’s mayor, Spyros Galinos during his speech at the event.
