migrant-rescue-missionA new tragedy involving migrants took place in the early hours on Tuesday, November 18, near the Greek island of Kos. Around 3:30 am a Frontex vessel that was patrolling the area spotted a capsized plastic boat. A search and rescue operation was quickly launched involving port authority vessels and a Super Puma helicopter.
So far authorities have located the bodies of nine unfortunate migrants, four children, four women and a man. Seven people were rescued in the operation. The information regarding the exact number of missing persons is not clear at the moment, since the survivors can only estimate that the boat was carrying between 18 to 20 people. The search operation in the region is still ongoing.
More than 600,000 refugees and migrants have made the dangerous journey of crossing the Greek border from Turkey this year. Most of them come from Syria and other countries in the Middle East where they faced extreme poverty and conflict. However, the vast majority of migrants do not stay in Greece, they head north through the Balkans to the more prosperous northern European countries.
More than 500 people have died or are missing since the beginning of the year.
