Protesting Farmers Try to Enter Greek Parliament Building, Police Use Tear Gas

farmThe protest rally that started at 11am on Wednesday at Syntagma square culminated with protesters trying to enter the parliament courtyard and the police pushing them out.
Over 5,000 farmers, livestock breeders, fishermen and food producers gathered at least one hour earlier at Syntagma Square to demonstrate against imminent changes in taxation and the pension system reform. The farmers unions and federations claim that they will face devastating financial problems if the reforms are implemented.
The demonstrators tried to enter the parliament courtyard but they were pushed away by policemen who used tear gas and noise bombs. Farmers hurled oranges and bottles of water at police.
There was tension earlier as Popular Unity leader Panagiotis Lafazanis tried to enter the rally. Farmers reacted by booing and throwing water bottles at the former SYRIZA minister.
A livestock breeder carrying a little lamb on his shoulders said, “…The situation is difficult. Our kids leave the country. I have 480 sheep and 500 acres of farming land and I owe money to everyone. I brought little Alexis (the lamb) so he can protest as well,” the farmer told Thema web television.
