Greek Prime Minister Discusses Israeli-Palestianian Conflict With Mahmoud Abbas

tsipras abbasGreek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Palestine on Wednesday and reiterated his desire for a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict.
In a joint press conference following their meeting in Palestine, Tsipras expressed his support for the creation of an official Palestinian state along the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as the country’s capital.
“The root of the Palestinian problem is the main factor for the destabilization of the region,” Tsipras said and added. “That is why today it is necessary to support any international initiative for its resolution”.
“Our position on the Palestinian issues is a principled one regardless of the development of our bilateral relations with Israel, which I had a chance to discuss with the Israeli leadership yesterday,” he noted in reference to his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “On our part, and particularly within the European Union, we will do anything we can to distress the tension and to create a constructive environment for the recommencement of peaceful discussion and processes.”
Tsipras noted that he is concerned about the violent attacks on civilians in Palestine as well as Israel’s settler policy that infringes on Palestinian people’s rights.
During his remarks, Abbas highlighted his appreciation toward Greece for the country’s support toward the Palestinian people and announced that Tsipras and himself agreed on the creation of a bi-ministerial committee.
The Palestinian leader, who advocates the global recognition of a Palestinian state along the 1967 borders, further noted that he has always been in favor of European assistance in the negotiations with Israel. Abbas also condemned any kind of terrorist attack around the globe in the aftermath, of attacks in Paris, Beirut, Mali, Tunisia.
Tsipras also announced that Abbas will visit Athens on December 21st for a two-day state visit.
