Cypriot Parliament Gives Authorities Increased Power Over Citizens Communications

mobile-phoneThe House of Representatives approved by majority vote, on Thursday, a bill which gives the right to the Republic’s competent authorities to do away with communications privacy, under certain circumstances.
The bill allows access to listed private communication. Prosecuting authorities have long maintained that the bill will be an important tool to ensure the acceptability of testimony and evidence before the courts in cases related to financial crimes.
The bill went through by 28 votes in favour, primarily from the ruling right-wing party, DISY party with some support from the centre right party DIKO, with all of the main opposition left-wing AKEL MPs voting against the proposed bill.
Most of the MPs who voted against the bill pointed out that they did so in protest because they believe that law enforcement authorities and institutions have not done what they were supposed to do in order to bring those responsible for the country’s near economic collapse before justice.
The new law allows police, after requesting and securing a court order, to monitor and gather written electronic communications of suspects.
