Greek Central Bank Governor Calls for Political Consensus

giannis-stournaras-eurogroupBank of Greece governor Yannis Stournaras on Sunday called on the country’s party leaders to show political consensus in order for Greece to get out of the economic crisis.
Stournaras spoke on Mega television on Sunday saying it is crucial that Greece’s parliamentary forces maintain the consensus achieved in July, when Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras signed the country’s third and harshest bailout deal.
The central bank chief made the comments after Tsipras failed to gain the desired consensus at the meeting of political leaders. All opposition leaders claimed they will vote against the tough security fund reforms, thereby shaking the fragile SYRIZA-ANEL majority of just three seats.
Stournaras believes that if the Greek government proceeds with the reforms, the country will come out of the crisis.
“There has been a high degree of consensus when the (bailout) deal was voted in by a big parliamentary majority last July,” Stournaras said.
“It (the consensus) should be safeguarded to secure political stability, support a definite exit from the crisis and pave the way towards growth,” he said.
Greece and its creditors agreed on a new set of reforms the country must approve in December to qualify for an additional 1 billion euros in aid.
