German Finance Minister Warns Tsipras on Criticism of IMF

Wolfgang-Schaeuble2German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble responded to Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras‘s critical comments of the International Monetary Fund’s future role in the Greek bailout.
Schaeuble appeared to be dismissive of Tsipras’s comments on the IMF‘s participation in the program, noting that it is not in Greece’s favor to do so, Reuters reports. Schaeuble was attending an Ecofin meeting in Brussels, with the Eurozone’s other finance ministers.
During a televised interview on Monday evening, Tsipras questioned the IMF’s strategy in the ongoing Greek bailout program. He accused the fund of asking Greeks to endure harsh measures and of making unrealistic Greek debt relief demands to European creditors. Tsipras noted that the IMF would have to compromise in order to join.
More than three months into the three year 86 billion euro Greek bailout program, the IMF has yet to decide whether it will officially take part, despite having representatives during negotiations for the exact reforms and measures Greece must take. The fund’s hesitation stems from a twofold demand. Europe should proceed with Greek debt restructuring while the Greek government should implement the bailout’s agreements.
