The Greek island of Lesvos, located in the East Aegean Sea has received more than 440,000 migrants and refugees this year, according to the latest available data by the United Nations Refugee Agency. As such, it is the single greatest entry point of new arrivals into Europe.
Lesvos, an island with a population of 80,000 people, has captivated international attention amid this refugee crisis. Among the various Non-Governmental Organizations that have set up shop on the island is the international Rescue Committee.
Mandy Patinkin, who hails from the United States and currently stars in the TV series “Homeland,” visited the island to assist and urge people around the world to act. A video by the International Rescue Committee shows Patinkin helping out new arrivals, sharing his thoughts on this humanitarian crisis and urging the viewers to support the refugees.
“I just don’t get it. I don’t get how people let this happen to people. And then I don’t get how when wonderful people like the people in Greece are bringing these people here and helping them…” he said and added “How people in different countries all over the world can be frightened of people who have suffered so much. Who are so in need. Who are desperately asking to have freedom, justice and dignity. Just give them a welcome and let them into your home.”
