Activists Arrested in Greece after Power Plant Incident

greenpeece_828169454Ten Greenpeace activists were arrested after climbing a tower at a power plant belonging to Public Power Corporation (PPC), Greece’s main electricity provider in Kozani, Greece. The activists were protesting against the coal power plant, demanding for a switch towards renewable energy.
“We chose the largest and most polluting lignite station in the country, responsible for nearly 15 percent of national carbon dioxide emissions,” said energy supervisor for Greece at Greenpeace Takis Grigoriou. “We ask the PPC to change, to make dirty lignite a thing of the past, where it belongs, and look to the future, to the sun,” he said.
After climbing the cooling tower at the plant, the Greenpeace activists spent around 14 hours at a height of around 120 meters, painting “Go Solar” on the side of the tower. In the end they were arrested by Greek police. The activists claimed that their actions were part of global mobilization in light of the UN conference about climate in Paris.
“To meet the target of a temperature rise of no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius… we need 100 percent renewable energy by 2050 globally,” Grigoriou said, adding that Greenpeace had already made a plan to encourage the government to use renewable energy.
