Christmas Full Moon First in 40 Years

Winter’s firstĀ  “official” night will be the longest of the year. Conversely, in the southern hemisphere summer will begin, with the duration of the day at its peak. A few days later on Friday,Christmas night ,the sky will be truly illuminated, since there will be a full moon. The full moon will occur on Christmas for the first time in almost 40 years (the last time was in 1977). In the future, Christmas will coincide with a full moon every 19 years, for example in 2034, in 2053 and 2072.
Event at the Planetarium
With the digital planetarium show “An Immortal Telescope: The History of the Telescope Newall”, the National Observatory of Athens and the Eugenidou Foundation will celebrate tonight the winter solstice and invite children and adults at the New Digital Planetarium of the Eugenidou Foundation.
Three performances will take place, at 18:30, 19:30 and 20:30 the admission is free for the public. What is necessary is to have the entry tickets, the distribution of which will be held by theĀ  Planetarium’s Fund today.
The digital show lasts 25 minutes and was created by Fanny Matsopoulos. The show is dedicated to the history and the scientific contribution of the telescope Newall, which was once the largest refractor telescope in the world, and is now installed and working at the Observatory of Penteli.
Meanwhile, otherĀ  spaces of the Foundation will host Fanis Matsopoulos photo exhibition, which is dedicated to the National Observatory of Athens. The Laboratory UTech Lab of the Eugenidou Foundation will also provide an opportunity for all visitors to be photographed withĀ the footage of the show as their backdrop.
