Greek Education Minister Brings Back "Eternal Students"

filis-708_16The new bill on education is to bring back “eternal students” and the university asylum, while students will participate in dean elections.
Articles on the proposed bill by Education Minister Nikos Filis includes:
Full restoration of the status of the so-called eternal students. Those who have been removed from registrars’ lists can be registered again. The bill says that a student does not lose student status unless he or she graduates. It is estimated that there are 150,000 in Greece’s schools of higher education.
However, students who have passed the minimum period of study plus two years will not be eligible for food benefits, housing, reduced transport fares and transfers.
The participation of students in dean elections is restored, as it has been abolished by the previous legislation. The weight of the students vote increases if more students vote.
If the bill passes in parliament, new dean elections must be held within 50 days. Students will participate with representatives in the management bodies, namely the senate, faculty, department, etc.
The existing article on university asylum would be reverted, as the university asylum returns. This means that police has no right to enter university buildings or premises.
