Greek Parliament Expected to Vote on the Recognition οf the Palestinian State

palestinian stateThe Greek parliament is expected to vote in favor of recognizing the state of Palestine on Tuesday, December 22. Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has been supporting the creation of an independent Palestinian state for a long time and the vote on Tuesday will provide him with the approval of his government.
According to AFP, sources within the government noted that the Greek parliamentary vote will be attended by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who arrived in Athens Sunday and attended a meeting with the Greek President of the Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos, as well as the Greek Prime Minister on Monday, December 21.
After the parliamentary vote, Greece will become one of the many states that have already legally recognized Palestine. However, the creation of an independent Palestinian State is still far in the future since the negotiations between Palestinian and Israeli authorities have still a long way to go.
The continued expansion of Israeli settlements has received international criticism. “The reality is that continued settlement activity in occupied Palestinian territory is doing significant damage to any possibility of a lasting peace between the two sides and is moving the situation ever closer to a one-state reality,” Jeffrey Feltman, the United Nations under-secretary general for political affairs, stated on the matter only a few months ago.
