German Officials Slam Greece Over Refugee Crisis

Wolfgang-Schaeuble2German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble and Bavaria’s Interior MinisterĀ Joachim Herrmann accused Greece of failing to handle the continuous refugee inflow.
Schaeuble talked to Bild am Sonntag newspaper saying that Athens has repeatedly ignored the Dublin agreement that oblige migrants to file for asylum in the first European Union country to which they arrive. He said German courts had decided that refugees were not being treated humanely in Greece and could not be sent back there.
“The Greeks should not put the blame for their problems only on others, they should also see how they can do better themselves,” Schaeuble said.
Herrmann spoke to Die Welt am Sonntag newspaper and criticized Greece for not securing its external borders.
“What Greece is doing is a farce,” Herrmann said, adding that any country that does not meet its obligations to secure its external borders should leave the Schengen zone.
Greek Government replies to Germans’ criticism
Athens reacted to the comments of the German finance minister with government spokesperson issuing the following statement:
“Mr. Schaeuble needs to be reminded that Greece gives a big battle of humanism in the EU borders, and in conditions of economic and social crisis caused by five years of continuous austerity.”
“The vast majority of Europeans recognize our efforts. He [Schaeuble] prefers to attack Greece verbally, apparently for his own political reasons,” the statement concludes.
