Thousands of Santas Flood Chania Streets in Greece [video]

Santas Flood ChaniaAbout 6,500 Santas on Sunday flooded the streets and the old port of Chania on Crete, running to raise funds for health institutions catering to seriously ill children.
This was the 5th Chania Santa Run, a constantly growing charity event. Santas of all ages, from many parts of Greece, gathered at the 1st Chania High School courtyard and started running through the main streets of the city.
During the run, shop owners offered candy to the children and tsikoudia to the adult runners. The Santas ran to the old port and then came back to the high school for the big Christmas party.
“This year the response was impressive. The Santa Run is now established as a special celebration,” told AMNA news agency one of the organizers, Panagiotis Orfanidis.
The first Santa Run in 2011 gathered 400 runners. A year later the runners reached 1,500 and they doubled in 2013. In 2014 there were 5,000 running Santas and this year they reached 6,500.
The first four Santa Runs raised a total of 151,034 euros. This year organizers estimate that about 90,000 euros will be raised for ill children.
