Candidates for New Democracy Leadership Gear Up for Sunday's Election

meimarakis-mitsotakisLess than a week before Sunday’s election, the two candidates for New Democracy leadership are gearing up for the final stretch of their campaign.
The goal of Vangelis Meimarakis and Kyriakos Mitsotakis is to win the votes that went to Apostolos Tzitzikostas and Adonis Georgiadis in the first round. Both candidates represent a turn to the center and declare that they are pro-Europe.
Meimarakis’ line is to preserve the conservative party’s traditional values and he has the support of former prime minister Costas Karamanlis, a much-respected party member with a lot of pull. He also declares that he is loyal to party founder Constantinos Karamanlis.
Mitsotakis, on the other hand, represents the younger, more centrist, technocratic and neo-liberal tendencies within the party. He believes in the reformation of New Democracy to meet the new political challenges and become a true opposition to Alexis Tsipras.
Meimarakis will be in Thessaloniki Monday and Tuesday where he will meet with local party members and local authority representatives. His opponent will be in Thessaloniki Tuesday and Wednesday to meet with potential supporters.
