Greek businessman and former owner of AEK FC Makis Psomiadis passed away, in the early hours of January 6. The football tycoon was driven to Elpis hospital by his son, Stavros.
Upon his arrival he was unconscious and despite the doctors’ efforts, the 67-year-old man passed away. It was assumed that the cause of death was a heart attack, however, the doctors have asked for an autopsy.
Makis Psomiadis had been released from prison in August, after serving a four year and two month sentence. The once powerful businessman was convicted in April 2014 by the judges of a three-member court of appeal for felonies to ten years imprisonment after being found guilty of embezzling 21.5 million euros while he was president of Greek football club AEK, between 2001 and 2003.
Makis Psomiadis was born in 1948 in Kavala. His father was a priest. He first became involved with AEK in 1989 when he took on the amateur team. He slowly began his involvement with the FC’s management before becoming its president. Apart from AEK he was also involved with the Greek teams Akratitos and Kavala.
His funeral will take place on Saturday the cemetery in Kokkinos Mylos, Athens.
