Greek Main Opposition New Democracy Prepares for Sunday's Leadership Election

meimarakis-mitsotakisIf everything goes smoothly on Sunday, Greece will have a new permanent leader at the helm of the country’s main opposition for the first time in more than six months.
Former interim President Vangelis Meimarakis faces off against Kyriakos Mitsotakis for New Democracy’s presidency. In the first round of elections held on December 20, Meimarakis collected 39.8% of the vote against Mitsotakis’ 28.5%. Around 404,000 people voted.
That number is the maximum number of voters who could vote on Sunday as only people who voted in the first round are eligible to vote in the second. The fact that this time the process does not include registering and paying upon arrival at the poll station, should mean that the election results will be revealed by late Sunday evening.
New Democracy has been led by interim leaders since Antonis Samaras stepped down from the presidency in early July 2015. Meimarakis then took over as interim President. Following the technical difficulties that led to the postponement of the party’s presidential elections in November, Meimarakis also stepped down and Yannis Plakiotakis took over.
