Athens Public Hospital Left Without Cancer Medication

nosokomeio-thalamos-giatroi-euaggelismosDozens of cancer patients at Laiko public hospital in Athens are left without treatment as medication ran out, according to the Athens Medical Association (ISA).
There are other hospitals in the Attica region that have shortages in medicine for cancer as well, ISA says. The doctors association denounces the shortages and talks of an unprecedented situation in public hospitals.
“Today at Laiko hospital the complete lack of chemotherapy medication left dozens of patients without their planned treatment. Also similar problems have surfaced in other hospitals such as Andreas Syngros, where there is lack of four antiretroviral drugs. A similar situation exists in most public hospitals in the country as the funds for the purchase of drugs have not been released yet. As a result the shelves of pharmacies are empty,” said a statement released by ISA.
According to the Athens Macedonia News Agency, several hospitals around Greece had reported a similar problem. The health ministry had assured that the funds had been secured and the medicines had been sent to the hospitals.
However, ISA argues that this is not accurate. “We see that today hospital funds are depleted and most of them cannot place orders for medicines for the month of January.”
