U.S. Treasury Secretary Stresses Importance of IMF Role in Greece's Bailout

lew.12.1.708U.S. Secretary of Treasury Jack Lew spoke with Greek Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos over the phone on Tuesday evening and stressed that it is important the International Monetary Fund (IMF) remains involved in Greece’s bailout program.
According to Greek television correspondent Michalis Ignatiou, the U.S. Secretary stressed that the IMF must remain on board because it has a crucial role on the reforms Greece must make. He also highlighted the need for Greece to further develop cooperation with its international partners.
Lew also said that the Greek debt must become sustainable and that the reforms must continue. Provided that Greek authorities adhere to their commitments and continue to implement the agreed upon reforms, the U.S. official commented that the international community will keep its promise to make the Greek debt sustainable by providing the necessary relief.
Lew noted that the U.S. Treasury will be keeping “a close eye” on economic developments in Greece.
