Greek PM Tsipras Keen on Job Openings in Public Health and Education Sectors

proslipseis_129Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras revealed today that his government is trying to convince the country’s international creditors, who essentially make all decisions about the way Greece should run its affairs, of the need to proceed with job openings in the health and education sectors.
Leaving the question of hiring proceedings aside, which in Greece tend to have a mainly non-transparent and clientelistic format, there is no doubt that the country’s public health and education systems are on the verge of collapse. Lack of funding and major cuts are the main culprits behind the current catastrophic state and the need to prevent the further deterioration of public health and education services is most urgent.
Investments in health, education and infrastructure rank among the best ways to ensure a nation’s economic and social development. Countless studies have shown this to be the case, so there is no question about what needs to be done to re-boost Greece’s economy. Those who continue to believe that private investments alone can do the trick, live in a fantasy world.
Same goes about the private sector as a whole. It is simply absurd to think that the private sector is capable to lift the economy on its own. Public investments represent a way out of the crisis, but Greece’s international creditors have shown no interest so far in accommodating such an economic recovery program.
Nevertheless, one can only hope that, at the very least, the Brussels neoliberals will approve of the Greek government’s request to create job openings in the public health and education sectors. What is at stake is nothing else than the physical well-being and the very future of the country.
