Athens Medical Association Reports Deficiencies in Fight Against Flu Virus

athens-medical-associationThe Athens Medical Association has expressed concern over Greece’s ability to fight the flu virus, which has already took the lives of six people and has led another 35 to the ICU.
The Association stressed that there are significant deficiencies and pointed out that this is the first year that no flu vaccination campaigns took place. Therefore, the population’s immunity levels have significantly dropped.
Meanwhile, the public health system is facing severe problems and the Association expects it will soon collapse. Furthermore, the Association explained that even though the flu epidemic was expected, the Health Ministry did not take timely action to ensure extra beds in ICUs.
As a result, the waiting lists have dramatically increased, almost reaching 70 patients per day. In fact, some patients lost their lives while waiting for a bed in the ICU.
Greek Nurses’ Union president Dimitris Skoutelis noted: “Unfortunately, our worst fears were confirmed. Less ICU beds means that more people will eventually pass away.”
