refugee-crisis-lesbosAnother tragedy involving refugees occurred off the coast of Samos, Greece. Greek Coast Guard officials were patrolling the area close to the Greek island when they spotted the bodies of six refugees.
The officials managed to retrieve the bodies of five people, two men and three women, however, due to the bad weather conditions in the area, they were unable to retrieve the body of the sixth unfortunate refugee, which was located on a rocky part of the island.
Furthermore, a wreck survivor was also spotted in the nearby beach, who notified the authorities that he was travelling with 17 other refugees. In the end, he identified the five bodies as people who were travelling with him.
The Coast Guard investigation in the area is still ongoing.
14,000 refugees arrived in Lesvos during January
In the meantime, the difficult weather conditions have also caused a drop in the number of refugees arriving on the Greek island of Lesvos. On days with high winds, arrivals are close to zero, however, they reach up to 2,000 when the weather conditions are better.
Over the last 24 hours 1,600 people have reached the island, bringing the total number of refugee arrivals in Lesvos since the beginning of the year to 14,000.
According to the police, the high flow of refugees in Greece in the first 15 days of January shows that there are large numbers on the Turkish coast looking for a way to reach Europe.
