Greece Must Set Up Refugee Hotspots Urgently, Migration Commissioner Says

Migrants wait to be registered at a camp set up for migrants from Syria near Moria on the island of Lesbos.
Greece must have set up refugee and migrant registration centers within the next four weeks if they are to honor their commitments, European Union Migration Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos said.
Avramopoulos spoke to German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung, saying that the same applies for Italy as well. The Commissioner also expressed concern that migrant inflows from the Middle East, Asia and northern Africa may increase in the coming months.
“We have no more than four weeks in order to achieve results at the borders,” Avramopoulos said. At the same time, he expressed the growing concern for strong social reactions to the uncontrolled influx in countries such as Germany.
Avramopoulos stressed that Italy must have its required hotspots ready at the same time frame.
The Commissioner criticized EU member-states that are refusing to comply with the refugee-sharing pact, saying that the Commission has provided these countries with all possible support.
“I went to every country, offered support everywhere, economic, technical and in infrastructure,” the Greek commissioner said.
