The Greek government tore into European governments with allegations that the country is not doing its part in protecting Europe from the inflow of refugees and migrants.
And rightly so. EU’s “big and unfair blame game against Greece,” to use Greek alternate minister Yiannis Mouzalas’ words to reporters at a meeting of European Union interior ministers in Amsterdam on Monday — “is despicable.”
First, Greece has been left largely on its own to deal with hundreds of thousands of refugees who end up on its shores trying to reach Europe, while other European countries have sealed their borders.
Second, Greek authorities have been rescuing human souls from drowning in the Aegean sea on a daily basis since the eruption of Europe’s refugee crisis, and the Greek people in general have displayed great compassion towards refugees and their families.
Third, EU officials remain silent about the causes of the refugee crisis, which are purely political in nature and directly related to the consequences of the West’s interventions in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and Syria.
It is about time that Greek governments stood up to the hypocrisy of European governments and EU officials. They should have been doing the same thing all along with the bailout plans and the IMF-inspired austerity.
