EU Considers to Exclude Greece from the Schengen Area

airport-passport1Having long ago lost its sovereignty in return for bailouts, Greece finds itself now in a position where its borders could be sealed off from the rest of Europe as EU leaders seek to find a way to stop migrant influx without even being asked.
A number of European countries, including Austria, Hungary, and Slovenia, have been urging all along fencing off Greece to keep migrants out, but now it seems that the idea is being seriously considered by the European Commission itself.
Still, there is nothing new to the abominable idea of erecting fences to keep refugees out Europe. Hungary has already built a fence along its border with Serbia, Slovenia is doing the same thing on the Croatian border, and the Greek-Turkish land border was secured as far back as in 2012 with a 12.5 kilometer fence.
By considering to seal off Greece’s borders from the rest of Europe, EU leaders aim to save the Schengen zone by moving its frontier north. But by doing so, they would be excluding Greece from the Schengen area.
As expected, the Greek government has reacted with anger to this idea, stating that it would turn the country into “a cemetery of souls.”
However, the fact of the matter is that Greece is at the mercy of its creditors for its financing needs and all that Athens can do is kick and scream, but not much more.
As things stand, Greece’s only weapon is to threaten to leave the Eurozone and the EU altogether.
