FYROM Raises Second Wire Fence on Border with Greece

fyrThe Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia is raising a second wire fence on its border with Greece, in the neutral zone between Idomeni and Gevgelija.
This is a measure along the European Union’s efforts for stricter control of the migrant inflow towards central and northern Europe.
On Saturday the FYROM army started cleaning the area and raising a second barbed wire fence parallel to the existing one on the neutral zone in the border crossing point between Idomeni and Gevgelija.
The first fence was raised in November. The fence has been extended and it is estimated to be around 35 kilometers so far.
Die Welt: EU sees its borders at FYROM
The European Union has started seeing FYROM as Europe’s external border after Greece’s inability to guard its borders with Turkey, says a report on German newspaper Die Welt.
According to the report EU member states have lost their trust in Greece to protect Europe’s borders from the uncontrollable migrant inflow coming from Turkey.
Brussels are moving towards a solution that would involve Frontex and FYROM authorities guarding Europe’s borders in the Balkans.
“The European Union is struggling to protect its external border. The efforts are now focusing in securing the borders between Greece and FYROM, which in essence are becoming EU’s borders,” the newspaper says.
