Greek PM Tsipras Promises a New Era in Country’s Television Landscape

Television LandscapeGreece’s television landscape will soon change, with the number of licenses granted for TV channels broadcasting nationally restricted to four, according to Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.
The Syriza-led government has been eager to change the country’s television landscape since it came to power in January 2015, but its stance on the matter has met fierce opposition from the conservative party of New Democracy and the Pasok socialist party.
Be that as it may, it seems the time has come for Tsipras and his Syriza-led government to reshape the status of private television channels in Greece.
A bill will be presented to Parliament tomorrow outlining the procedures of granting a TV license.
According to Minister of State Nikos Pappas, the competitive license applications process for television broadcast will be put on fast track.
The fast-track approach to granting TV licenses has raised questions about transparency and other issues, so it remains to be seen whether the new Greek television landscape soon to emerge will be qualitatively different than the current one.
