Greece at the Center of Today’s Eurogroup Meeting

EurogroupGreece is once again at the center of today’s Eurogroup in Brussels as there is urgent need to examine the course of negotiation talks between the Greek government and its creditors.
The first meeting in Athens between the two sides ended on a sour note as the creditors were not satisfied with the reform proposals made by the Greek authorities. The creditors left a few days ago and there are no indications when they might return to Athens to resume talks with Greek officials.
However, Eurogroup president Jeroen Dijsselbloem told reporters upon his arrival in Brussels for today’s meeting that there has been progress in the negotiation talks between the Greek government of Alexis Tsipras and the representatives of Greece’s international creditors.
He noted that there are some issues separating the two sides, but expressed optimism that an agreement will soon be reached.
Dijsselbloem’s comments were instrumental in halting a steep slide in today’s trading session in the Greek stock market.
Similar optimism was expressed by the Finnish Minister of Finance Alexander Stubb, who said that he expects the first review of Greece’s bailout program to be successfully completed within the next two weeks.
However, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble was rather enigmatic when he told reporters that the markets are worried about Greece. He did not elaborate any further on the meaning of this statement.
