Greek Farmers Determined to Block Athens with Tractors

GREECE FARMERS PROTESTGreek farmers continue their protest actions against the security funds bill, determined to bring their tractors to the Greek Parliament on Friday, despite police ban.
A mass rally of farmers, professionals and workers is planned for Friday at Syntagma Square across the Greek Parliament. Farmers are determined to bring their tractors along, despite the fact that traffic laws prohibit the entrance of any type of farming vehicles within city limits. Farmers have asked for some tractors to be allowed in Athens as a symbolic gesture. Police, however, have denied claiming traffic laws.
The Greek government and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras have called on farmers to sit down and negotiate their demands. Farmers, however, are adamant that the draft bill on farmers security funds and taxation to be scrapped and negotiate from scratch.
Cretan farmers are determined to embark with their tractors on ferries from Crete on Thursday and arrive at the Piraeus Port on Friday. Greek police have announced that no tractors or any type of farming vehicles would be allowed to disembark at Piraeus Port.
There is a total of 64 farmers blockades throughout Greece and the Greek-Bulgarian border. Most of the farmers will attempt to enter Athens with their tractors. It is not certain if they will manage that, but it is certain that they will participate on foot at the massive rally in front of parliament.
Farmers of the Tempi block in central Greece said they will not participate in the Athens rally, but they would open the blockade on Friday to facilitate those who want to travel to the capital to demonstrate at Syntagma Square.
Greek police plan to stop tractors entering Athens
Greek police are planning a series of operations that would prevent tractors and other farming vehicles from entering the capital.
Basic entry points to Attica region will be blocked by police. Specifically, toll stations at Afidna and Elefsina will be blocked by police and no tractors will be allowed to pass.
At Piraeus Port, police forces will not allow tractors to disembark from ferries. They would allow passengers on foot only to exit the ships. Coast guard forces on Crete will also prevent farming vehicles from embarking on ferries.
Police forces of regions bordering with Attica region are ordered to stop tractors trying to enter Attica. Athens police will also block tractors from entering avenues and roads that lead to central Athens.
Police forces have been advised to avoid confrontation with farmers. For this reason, the blocks will be guarded by traffic police. Riot police will be standing by and their main forces will be at the capital’s center.
