Greek Theologians Condemn Valentine's Day as Pagan Practice

valentine's dayThe Union of Theologians on the Greek island of Lesbos released an official announcement condemning the celebration of Valentine’s Day.
The theologians question the motives behind the organization of various events on the island and called on the islanders to refrain from participating in the “foreign and pagan celebrations.” Furthermore, they noted that the exchange of gifts on this day and the use of the heart symbol are also pagan practices.
“Why are some people trying desperately to introduce such a celebration on our island?” they asked in their announcement, adding that the organizers are trying to establish the events for financial gain. “Have you ever considered the cultural damage that stems from the establishment of such festivals?” they add. “Do the residents of Lesbos agree with the squandering of public money on projects of lesser quality?”
The organizers of these events are misleading people, exercising a propaganda of the worst kind when they fail to note that the people who participate in these events have nothing to do with the Greek Orthodox Christian Church, stated the announcement.
Many of our fellow citizens, have stated to the members of our association, their frustration towards our local elected authorities, for not participating in any Greek Orthodox ceremonies, but instead participating in the celebrations for Valentine’s Day, they add.
