One in Two Greeks Owes Money to the State to a Total of €86.3 Billion

Figures show that 84.9% of debtors — or 3.6 million citizens — owe more than 3,000 euros each to the Greek State, while one in five taxpayers have the government seizing bank deposits, salaries, pensions or rents.
Data shows that on January 1, 2016, 4,305,153 Greeks had overdue debts to the state. This is more than half of Greece’s adults who are obligated to file their taxes. The total debts to the state amount to 82.298 billion euros, with debts to customs offices not included.
Analysts say that successive tax measures during the economic crisis have led 4.3 million Greeks to overcharge themselves and defer on their tax payments.
