A symbolic protest against the closed borders took place on Friday morning, with members of the social European initiative “Safe Passage – Stop WARS” hanging a banner on the rock of Acropolis in Athens.
Members of the initiative highlighted in their announcement that “against the logic of fortress Europe, we are bringing in front solidarity and humanity. For months now, the Greek society is leading in an unprecedented solidarity movement on the islands and cities.”
The initiative defends the refugees‘ right to life and dignity. “We are fighting to ensure a safe passage for all the refugees, for all the people who are going through war and are facing death,” the group says.
The group’s announcement also stated “(We want) life to prevail, solidarity against the far-right voices of Europe, against xenophobia and racism. Europe has no right to infringe the Geneva Convention and the international treaties that protect refugees. Solidarity-Equality-Democracy.”
Moreover, the members of the initiative condemned the security service members of Acropolis for using violence on them.
