Official Arrives on Greek Island With Passport from Turkish-Occupied Cyprus

paratiritis-708A Turkish observer arrived on Chios island on Sunday night holding a passport from Turkish-occupied Cyprus; Greek authorities are to decide whether he will be accepted in the country.
The Turkish official is part of the observers’ team from the neighboring country who will be monitoring the refugee admission and return procedures on Greek islands as per Friday’s agreement between the European Union and Turkey to tackle the refugee crisis. The Turkish national is a police officer.
Greece and Cyprus do not recognize the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as a legal state, thereby the official’s passport is not considered valid by Greek authorities.
The Turkish policeman was allowed to remain on the island for the night, yet he was transferred to the Chios customs office until authorities could decide whether he will be admitted in Greece. The Foreign Ministry and National Intelligence Service has also been engaged in the incident.
According to sources, the Turkish official will be allowed to remain in Greece with a special permit, but his passport will not be stamped.
A total of 25 Turkish observers will arrive on Greek islands with some of them arriving on Sunday. Their task is to monitor procedures at the migrant registration centers. Specifically, six of them will operate on Chios, eight on Lesbos, five on Samos, three on Leros and three on Kos.
