Greek PM Tsipras Calls on EU Refugees Crisis Coordinator to Ask Turkey to Honor Agreement

to-paixnidi-sta-xeria-tis-merkel_38.w_lGreek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is to ask the EU Coordinator for the refugee crisis in Greece, Maarten Verwey, to intervene so that Turkey honors the deal on tackling the migrant crisis.
The European Union and Turkey agreed on Friday on certain measures to stem the refugee flows from the Turkish shores to Greece. After the signing of the accord, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker appointed Dutch economist Maarten Verwey to act as the EU Coordinator for the refugee crisis in Greece.
The official date for implementing the agreement was Sunday, March 20. However, on that date 1,650 refugees crossed the Aegean from the Turkish coast and landed on nearby Greek islands. A few hundred more arrived at Greek islands on Monday as well.
Tsipras is to ask Verwey to call on Turkey to implement the measures it has agreed on. In addition, he has planned contacts with President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, asking them to put pressure on Ankara to deal with the issue.
Also, within the next few days officials from Greece and the EU will visit Turkey to discuss the implementation of the agreement to address the migration crisis, a Turkish Foreign Ministry official said.
