As most of the European countries close their borders to the refugees and migrants, resulting in more than 50,000 people being hemmed in Greece, several Greek families are opening their homes to the refugee families. Dozens of households in northern Greece welcome refugees and migrants under their roof, while the Greek authorities struggle to provide a decent shelter for about 14,000 people stuck in Idomeni since the closure of the Macedonian border.
Among the families providing shelter to the refugee and migrant families is Dimitris Spiridis. Spiridis, a grandson of refugees and a former migrant worker himself, has offered hospitality to three Syrian families in the past week. He and his wife, along with their four children are currently living with six more adults and six children in his 180-square-meter house in Evropos.
“I went there last Monday, and all I could see was mud, all I could hear was the crying of children, and everyone had a cough” after spending days outdoors in the rain and cold, Spiridis told The Associated Press.
“We spent three weeks in the (Idomeni) camp,” said Fadi Kamer Aldeen to the Associated Press —  Fadi is a 40-year-old lawyer from Idlip who is staying in Spiridis’ house with his wife and three children. “Now, we’re here with this most hospitable family, getting some rest. We can live like human beings. This is a very kind family and the Greeks have helped refugees a lot,” he added.
