Bulgaria Set to Raise Fence on Border with Greece

56f53ed51dc5245f228b476aBulgaria is set to build a razor-wire fence along its southern border with Greece to stop possible migrant flows, Prime Minister Boyko Borisov said on Friday.
“The major threat that I see at the moment is from the Greek border, which is very long and unprotected. We are worried that in the last several months the Greek government has not taken any measures,” Borisov told his parliament.
“We have information that right now, groups of 1,000-2,000 people are organizing themselves (to enter Bulgaria). We are ready to take any measure, including, if necessary, the building of a light barrier,” Borisov said.
Bulgaria and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia agreed on Friday to collaborate on preventing people crossing through FYROM’s eastern border with Bulgaria.
“We have set up hotlines for exchange of information and sent people in our neighboring countries to monitor any start or preparation for such moves,” Borisov said.
Bulgaria’s south border with Greece is about 500 kilometers long. After the European Union decided to shut the “Balkan Route” that was allowing refugees coming from Greece to enter the FYROM and then move to central Europe, dozens of thousands of refugees are stranded in Greece. About 13,000 have been waiting at the Greece-FYROM border for over a month now in the hope that the border might open again.
Bulgaria has so far concentrated on reinforcing its other 259km southern border with Turkey, sending over 2,000 border police and speeding up the construction of 132.5km of a three-meter-tall fence.
In addition, parliament last month voted to let its army assist police in guarding the EU member’s borders to avoid a possible refugee influx.
