In a recent press release, the Athens-Attica & Argosaronic Hotel Association (AHA), announced that hotels in Athens have been seeing their occupancy numbers decrease since last fall until February 2016.
According to AHA’s data, there was a steady decrease throughout the autumn of 2015 in the overall performance of the Attica Hotel Industry, by 3.8 percent in September, 6.1 percent in October and 4.6 percent in November, with February showing a 1.2 percent decrease.
In addition, AHA compared these findings of the overall Attica Hotel Industry performance, with the rising arrivals from the Athens International Airport and concluded that there is a “leak” of tourists and travelers who switch to private rentals, such as Airbnb. The association characterized such services as “non-licensed and non-taxable “tourist” accommodations.”
In relation to the alarming numbers of its data, AHA urged the Greek authorities to impose a new legal, institutional and fiscal framework which doesn’t facilitate uneven market conditions in order to ensure state revenues, employment and customer safety.
