The recent publication by Wikileaks, revealing a conversation between IMF officials Poul Thomsen and Delia Velculescu, has caused intense reactions in Greece.
In a phone conversation between PM Alexis Tsipras and President of Democracy Prokopis Pavlopoulos, the latter demanded that the IMF mechanism is replaced by the European Stability Mechanism (ESM).
“As I have made publicly known, I think that since the European Union and the Eurozone have formed the ESM, the current mission of the IMF should have been taken over by ESM for a long time ago, through its own experienced members. And that is why, apart from anything else regarding the authority of the European Institutions, the know-how of the ESM members would clearly be superior than that of the IMF members, according to the the whole international background of the latter,” noted Pavlopoulos.
In the same conversation, PM Alexis Tsipras said that Greece will demand explanations regarding the IMF’s views on the matter.
