A Greek Island Among Hidden Diamonds of Europe

Kokkari, Samos
Kokkari is a very beautiful village in Samos, with approximately 1,000 citizens. It is located 10 km northeast the town of Samos. Built in the beginning of the 19th century, its name is widely claimed to derive from a kind of onion that is produced in the area.
Recently, Best European Destinations organization, listed Kokkari among the thirteen best hidden diamonds of Europe, in its annual list for 2016.
As Best European Destinations denotes, Samos is described as an island characterized by myths and beauties. It is the island of the founder of Mathematics, Pythagoras, the astronomer Aristarchos and the philosopher Epicurus. Having always been a remarkable commercial center and a great naval force in antiquity, it was always close to the noted mediterranean cultures.
Its virgin landscape is dominated by impressive mountains, caves and gorges, a feature that strongly reminiscent of the Greek inland.
The destinations also listed as hidden European diamonds are Civita di Bagnoregio in Italy, Rothenburg in Germany, Preko in Croatia, Rocamadour in France, Bohinj in Slovenia, Faial in the Portuguese Azores, Positano in Italy, Menton in France, Tellaro in Italy, Cavtat in Croatia, Santana in Portugal and Alberobello in Italy.
