The History Behind Thessaloniki's Hottest Neighborhood

ladadika
One of the most “famous” districts in Thessaloniki that attracts both tourists as well as locals is “Ladadika” — a historical neighborhood that has been configured just for pedestrians and constitutes a favorite destination especially for the nightlife.
Ladadika is one of the “hottest” places in the city to go out. The colorful yet historical neoclassical protected buildings radiate the spirit and atmosphere of the “old” Thessaloniki, whereas they are not more than five minutes away from Aristotle Square. The neighborhood is essentially a mix of the past and present, of traditional and contemporary.
ladadikaThe name “Ladadika” (from the Greek word “Ladi” which means oil in English), comes from the many shops that were in the area in the past and sold oil and byproducts of oil. The whole area served as a market before and during the Ottoman era. The neighborhood used to host many stores and merchants with a plethora of products, which started to degrade after the destructive wildfire of 1917. By mid 70’s, the area had almost been abandoned, when in 1985 the Ministry of Culture declared the area as a protected monument. Since then, the area proceeded with a rebuilding in order to preserve its unique heritage and character.
Nowadays, the area may not carry the unique scents of spices, cured meat products and oil, along with the smells from the boats and the saltines from the Thermaikos gulf, but it still continues to be one of the most vibrant and cult spots of Thessaloniki. The former oil shops and brothels have given their place mainly to taverns, bars, clubs and brasseries, which can satisfy any preference regarding entertainment.
Mediterranean Palace HotelWhere to stay
The Mediterranean Palace Hotel is a five-star hotel, located near the Ladadika district, with a magnificent view of the Thermaikos Bay. The Mediterranean Palace displays the most beautiful characteristics of Thessaloniki; the live cosmopolitan atmosphere, the refined sense of peacefulness and the traditional warm hospitality. The style and the luxury, in combination with its strategic position in the heart of the commercial and business center of the city, make the Mediterranean Palace an ideal destination.
It is also located just a 9-minute walk from the waterfront in Aristotelous Square and 2 km from the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki.
