Greece Takes Tight Measures to Secure Pope Francis During Visit to Lesbos

Pope FrancisGreek security services are taking extremely tight measures ahead of the visit of Pope Francis on the island of Lesbos, scheduled to take place on April 16.
The Chief of the Roman Catholic Church, will not use his special popemobile. The Pope will land at the Mytilene airport at 10 am where Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, Archbishop of Athens and all Greece Ieronymos will welcome him, along with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.
Top police officials are already on the island to implement the security measures. The three religious leaders will visit the Moria refugee reception center located on the Greek island. The three church leaders are scheduled to have lunch along with the refugees at the reception center.
Afterwards, Pope Francis will give a speech on the refugee crisis and the three church leaders will honor the refugees who drowned in the Aegean during the perilous journey from the Turkish coast. The pontiff is scheduled to fly back to Rome at 3 pm.
Citizen Protection General Secretary Dimitrios Anagnostakis, said the life of the island’s residents will not be affected by the mandatory security measures.
In a press release issued by Vatican, the Holy See said the aim of the pontiff’s visit to Lesbos is to support the refugees and to draw the world’s attention to the European migration crisis.
The pontiff’s first trip since he became a pope in 2013 was to the Italian island of Lampeduza, where, like Lesbos, thousands of migrants have landed there.
Accordingly, Archbishop Ieronymos has stated that the aim of the Pope’s visit is to send a strong message to all nations and their leaders to take responsibility in terms of dealing with the refugee crisis.
