A trilateral meeting between Greece, Italy and Albania will be held in Athens on Thursday to discuss plans to tackle the refugee crisis, according to the Greek foreign ministry.
Top police and foreign ministry officials from the three countries will discuss the refugee crisis and projects to halt the illegal migrant inflow in cooperation.
More specifically, the officials will focus on information exchange and ways to combat undocumented migrant networks as well as the readmission procedure and assistance from Greece, Italy and Albania on the asylum system.
Meanwhile, Greek authorities continue efforts to relocate thousands of refugees and migrants who are stranded on the Greece-Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia border at Idomeni and Piraeus Port. Migrants refuse to be taken to hospitality centers in the hope that the border might open again.
The Greek defense ministry said that Piraeus Port has started to decongest, but only 49 migrants agreed to be transported to a hospitality facility on Thursday morning. Authorities claim that most migrants will be transferred by Easter week.
Alternate Defense Minister Dimitris Vitsas said, “Piraeus Port will be decongested by Easter,” adding that the relocation procedure is well on track.
Another priority of the government is to decongest the facilities at the former Athens airport at Elliniko, the alternate minister added. About 6,000 refugees and migrants camp under squalid conditions at Elliniko.
