Greek Interior Min: ND's Law Proposal on Expatriates' Vote Is Hypocritical and Deliberate

Kouroublis
In an exclusive interview to Charalampos (Babis) Petrakis and Greekreporter, Interior Minister, Panagiotis Kouroublis, described ND’s recent law proposal that would enable expatriates to vote in Parliament elections, as “a draft, hypocritical and deliberate.”
Despite his disapproval of the current proposal, the Minister is positive regarding the opportunity for Greek expatriates to be able to vote, as long as it is decided through a serious discussion and proper procedures.
More precisely Kouroublis said that “to begin with, I find that it is a completely draft proposal – whoever reads it, can see it. Secondly, it (the law) obeys to the expediency of a trip, that Mr. Mitsotakis did to the US. The third thing that I would dare to say, is that it is also hypocritical, in the sense that New Democracy, until a year ago was the government, and for the past 15-20 years, New Democracy, who cares so much for the expatriates, why didn’t it attempt it sooner?”
Kouroublis goes on by saying “What I would like to say, is that whoever has an honest attitude, should give the Greek expatriates this opportunity — and I dare to say that I am not negative to begin with — as I think that it is a very big power that Greece should make good use of, by any means. However, New Democracy’s initiative should begin with a dialogue between the parties and the expatriates’ organizations, so that a proper, coordinated, calm and sober discussion takes place, to find exactly those parameters that would ensure the accuracy and the security of the procedure, to find how we could reach an advancement like this.
He also added that “Every other move of such type, serves to say the least party goals, party interests and do not serve at all national values, such as the serious dialogue of the Greek expatriates’ vote.”
