International Monuments Day Dedicated to Athletic Heritage

olympiaOn the occasion of the Olympic Games, this year’s International Monuments and Sites Day, which is celebrated every year on April 18th, is going to be dedicated to athletic heritage.
The International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and UNESCO, have set athletics as this year’s theme, in order to bring out the role of athletics and sports in the amelioration of the conditions of human life, recognizing not only several monuments and sites, but also sensitizing the popular opinion regarding values and their importance in the configuration of social cultural identities.
For Greece, this day is even more important, since athletics are an invention of the Greek civilization. The first contemporary Olympic Games, as a continuity of the games of ancient Olympia, took place in Athens. On the occasion of the celebration of the International Monuments and Sites, the department of ICOMOS in Greece, is organizing a public discussion dedicated to athletic heritage, which will take place at the Architect School of the National Technical University of Athens, on April 18th.
In addition, on Monday April 18th, almost all archeological sites and monuments will remain open with free entry to the public.
