IMF Chief: EU-IMF Common Goal to Help Greece Return to Growth

christine_LagardeInternational Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde said that the European Union and IMF common goal is to help Greece out of the crisis and return to growth.
Speaking to French newspaper Le Figaro, Lagarde said that the differences between the IMF and Greece’s European creditors are smaller than what is being reported. Both want Greece to stand on its own feet and return to the markets.
When asked why she believes that Greece’s European creditors insist on the Fund’s involvement, Lagarde said it was a matter of trust, since the IMF’s 70 years of experience means that rules and principles will be applied.
Lagarde reiterated that the Fund wants Greece in the euro zone and stated that Greece is an important European partner in managing the refugee crisis.
The IMF chief revealed that she will participate in Friday’s meeting of euro zone finance ministers in an effort to reach an agreement between Greece and creditors. Lagarde clarified that her participation will not solve the problem but she hopes she will contribute to a solution.
